ARCnet Network
ARCnet (Attached Resource Computer Network)
ARCnet stand for Attached
Resource Computer network. It is a LAN protocol and one of
the oldest, least expensive types of local area network. The
main advantage of ARCnet is that it uses various types of
media for transmission either twisted pair wire or coaxial
cable, and the star topology with hub attached to the
network. BNC and RJ-45 connectors used for connection.
The original ARCnet protocol was very slow and support data
rates up to 2.5 Mbps. It can support up to 255 computers per
network. Maximum segment length is 121 meters with UTP, 3485
meters with fiber-optic, and 30 meters from a passive hub
but it become popular because it was inexpensive, reliable,
and easy to install and to expand.
ARCnet basically a token
passing architecture and token are broadcast across the
entire network. The token moves from one computer to another
computer according to their numerical order (moves from
computer 1 to computer 2 and so on),
not considering their physical location where they are placed. A
normal ARCnet packet contains the information, destination
address, sending address and up to 508 bytes data.
Today transmission rate of fast ARCnet is improved that is
about 100 Mbps. Similarly ARCnet also includes the
capability to use optic fiber cable.
