There are
different ways to customize icons on Windows XP. The method to
change the desktop items like My Documents and Recycle Bin is
different from the method to change the icons of specific folders.

How to change Recycle Bin, My Documents and My Computer icons?
Right-click

Select Properties from
the list.

the Customize tab.

Click on the Change
Icon.
Choose an icon from the given list and click on the OK button.
However, you can't change the icon for every folder by using this method.
For example, you can't change the icon for a Windows folder like this.

Change Icons for Regular File Types ?
You can change the
icons for the .txt files as well. You just have to follow these steps:
Open
any Windows Explorer like Hard Drive C.
Click on Tools.
Select
Folder Options in the Tools menu.

Click on the File
Types tab.

Select the file type
you would like to change.
Click on the Advanced
button.
You will see the 'Edit File Type' dialog box. Click on the Change Icon
button.
Choose an icon from
the given options.
Click on the OK
button.
You should not use
this method to change the icons for drives or folders. Also, there are a
couple of file types which will not allow you to change icons in this way.

Change Icons for Application Shortcuts?
You can change the
icon for any application shortcut on the desktop, quick launch or the
start menu.
Right-click
on the application shortcut.
Select Properties.
Choose
the Shortcut tab in the next dialog box that appears.
Click
on the Change Icon button.

Select
the icon you prefer.
Click on
the OK button.
